General Business Occupations

 

The General Business Occupations Course is based on a combination of classroom lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on experience to prepare the students for employment in the office environment. The average number of hours to complete all coursework is 665 instructional hours. Course completion is based on competency attainment, instructional hours, and completion of the Microsoft Office Specialist and/or Quickbooks Certification. The course stresses fundamental skills such as English, math, basic computer skills, office skills, and job search skills. The Office Occupations training program is designed to equip students, with no prior Office or Data Processing background, with an understanding of the Office Occupations/Computer Operations field along with the skills needed to obtain and maintain employment. Upon completion of the training program, students will be able to perform routine office procedures such as, checking account reconciliation, preparing journal entries for the A/P, A/R and the G/L and the ability to select relevant information, and key that information into a computer system at employable levels of speed and accuracy. Students will have a basic understanding of Telephone Techniques and the ability to complete advanced filing projects.

General Cooking Occupations

 

The General Cooking Occupations Course is based largely on hands-on experience and teaches basic skills for employment in cooking occupations and food service. The General Cooking Occupations program provides training in the planning and preparation of foods for the foodservice industry and guides students towards the ServSafe Certification. The training also includes sanitation requirements for the proper cleaning of equipment, cooking utensils, and work area. The objective of this program is to give students the entry-level job skills necessary, including sanitation and safety measures; to compete for employment as cooks and prep/line cooks in full-service restaurants. Instruction is given through demonstrations, hands-on participation, handouts, lectures, videotapes, and cookbook assignments. Instruction is enhanced by practical hands-on application of learned skills in the cafeteria kitchen at the Central Valley Occupational Center facility. Evaluation and assessment are accomplished by written and/or verbal performance testing procedures. The average number of hours to complete all coursework is 420 instructional hours. Course completion is based on competency attainment and actual instructional hours may vary.

Welding & Industrial Maintenance

 

The Welding and Industrial Maintenance Course is based largely on hands-on experience and teaches basic skills of the welding trade. The Welding and Industrial Maintenance Program provides basic training in the areas of Gas and Oxyacetylene Welding, Electric Arc Welding, Mig (Metallic Inert Gas) Welding, Tig (Tungsten Inert Gas) Welding, Layout and Blueprint Reading, Plasma Torch Cutting, and Basic Electricity. The purpose of the Welding Program is to give students the entry-level job skills necessary to enter the welding trade or light industrial maintenance field. Instruction will be provided through lectures, demonstrations, testing procedures and hands-on participation. Formal classroom training is an integral part of the Welding Program. However, an emphasis is placed on hands-on participation. The average number of hours to complete all coursework is 770 instructional hours. Course completion is based on competency attainment and actual instructional hours may vary.

Retail Sales Cashier

 

The Retail Sales Cashier Course is based largely on a combination of classroom lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on experience to prepare the students for employment in the retail sales environment. Evaluation of competencies gained is made through written performance testing. The Retail Sales/Cashier class provides the skills and knowledge required to obtain entry-level positions including cash register operations, record keeping, and basic math. The goal of this course is to provide students with necessary skills for entry-level positions in any retail store, warehouse, grocery store or any position where cash handling is essential.

Photovoltaic Design and Installer

 

The Photovoltaic Design and Installer Course are based on a combination of lecture and hands-on experience. The Photovoltaic Design and Installer Program provide basic training in the areas of Safety, Electrical Theory, Energy Efficiency, PV System Design, PV Installation Techniques, and Job Readiness. The purpose of the Photovoltaic Installer Program is to give students the entry-level job skills necessary to enter the Solar Installation trade. Instruction will be provided through lectures, demonstrations, testing procedures and hands-on participation. The average number of hours to complete all coursework is 210 instructional hours. The program will train students to install and design a solar panel system, perform construction and electrical basics, learn about different forms of renewable energy, prepare for the NABCEP entry-level certification exam, and receive OSHA ten-hour training.

Professional Truck Driver

 

The Professional Truck Driver Course provides students with the skills and knowledge to qualify to take both the written and skills test administered by the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles and to seek employment as an entry-level commercial truck driver. Classroom and Behind-the-wheel training totaling 165 hours. Students will first attend 40 hours of classroom training covering such subjects as driver qualifications, log books, defensive driving, and job search techniques. At the end of this training, students will be required to pass the written exam administered by the Department of Motor Vehicle (D.M.V.) and obtain their class ‘A’ instructional permit. It is necessary to pass and obtain the instructional permit before proceeding to the behind-the-wheel training phase of the training course. The classroom training is followed by field training which includes both observation and behind-the¬ wheel time. The field training consists of driving in training areas and highway, city, driving with an emphasis on defensive driving. Backing, safety, and emergency procedures area also practiced extensively. The training also consists of DMV skills practicing, DMV road testing and skills/knowledge necessary to qualify to take the behind the wheel skills test administered by the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles. Students must satisfactorily complete theory and practical assignments.

Weatherization Measure Installer

(This course is not currently being offered.)

The Weatherization Course is a 140-hour course tailored specifically to the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Weatherization Program and similar utility-funded programs. This course is based on the “Core Competencies for the Weatherization Assistance Program” developed by the Weatherization Trainers Consortium. The course is also compliant with the BPI Energy Analyst Standards. This course will focus on weatherization terminology, testing, and analysis of energy saving technology. The program will cover the Department of Energy’s core competencies including installer fundamentals and intermediate fundamentals. This course will prepare students to obtain entry-level employment in the Green Industry as Weatherization Installers.
